Looked up to see a bad shot, that is what happens to so many amatures, like me. That is head movement and much in the right direction you describe. Keep you head still is not bad advice when players are moving their head that much. I've see it work/help so many times. Players do still move their head, just not so much.

This is great advice, Michael. Jim McLean accentuated this point many years ago in his 8-Step Swing video. Except for maybe Annika (here is Wayne De Francesco's analysis of her swing ua-cam.com/video/pwxI5IynxTE/v-deo.html), all pros dip their head. Some dip it before they reach the top of the backswing, some dip it just as they are on the verge of starting the downswing.

Just learn to waggle up and all the way down with wrists until they lock up. Adjust the face at address so when the wrists lock up the face is at the back of the ball and square. Move feet up 1/2”. You will be amazed how easy it to hit dead straight shots and how far they go. Gradually add backswing and follow through timing the lifting of the back foot and side bend through impact to prevent club head from out pacing hands and flipping. When you perfect the timing in full swings impact will sound crisp because there is more compression and faster rebound off the face. Hogan’s waggle was a rehearsal for wrist action through impact. 😊

Great video, Michael. I've struggled with this over the years. I found that my best ball position varies only from middle of my stance (wedges through 6-iron) to one ball forward (5-iron through hybrid). For the driver, I place the ball just inside my lead-side heel. You stated that the middle has to do with where your heels are. Isn't it easier to just place the ball in line with your gonads (testicles)? No matter how wide or narrow your stance, your crotch will always be the middle of your stance.

I’m 72. I learned to shape shots in the 80s after reading Nicklaus describe the cause and effect of tilting the spin axis like banking an airplane wing in Golf My Way and explained the goal was to control where the ball went after landing. Last month was lying two on a par 5, 130 yards to a right left green \ protected by a bunker in front with back left pin and set up to put 30 yards of right-to-left draw on the ball to “line it up with the runway” and one my mates said, “Do you know you are aiming at that house over there?” I answered, “Yep, just watch… ” then hit the shot, really hammering down for maximum spin. It curved and landed as visualized on the right front edge of the green, kicked hard left and rolled straight to the pin, hit it and dropped in for an eagle. 😊 That hole was a classic case of risk and reward created by the designer. A draw that extreme is a low percentage shot, but a straight shot would need to carry the bunker then stop on a dime to stay on the short sided green and boring by comparison. My goal was just to increase the odds of keeping the ball on the green and having it release towards the hole. It dropping in? The ‘rub of the green’ which occasionally rubs you the right way. 😂

I think that the information in this video was presented in a way will confuse a lot of novice golfers. I’ll simplify it: - Club face controls your start line. - Club path controls curve. The relationship between face/path determines where your ball starts and how much it curves (if it curves at all). If your face/path are square to each other, your shot will not have any curve to it, and it will start in whichever direction your club face is pointed.

If you extend hands thumbs down until they lock up in ulnar deviation a Vardon grip will prevent the forearms from rotating and the only way you can move the club with the hands is to waggle it up with shaft at about a 45° angle /. That restriction of rotation prevents the spinning of the shaft he’s talking about and and the free waggling from thumb down (ulnar deviation release ) to thumb up (radial deviation cocking) will result automatically when you swing. It is the genius hidden in the way the Vardon grip wraps pad of trail hand over lead thumb which is only revealed at full maxed out ulnar deviation - same ‘uncocking’ wrist action as cracking whip, fly casting or releasing a ball when tossing it forward . When you waggle the club up and down like that notice how effortlessly it accelerates the club head and changed the face angle. If you arrange the face in the hands at address with hands in ulnar deviation and face square to target you will find when you let the force of the swing pull hands into the waggle down orientation (ulnar deviation) the face will start open but swing square by impact producing a straight shot IF you aim slightly inside of center on the ball relative to target line >o not dead square on the back + It’s counter intuitive but if you hook the ball left when adding the waggle action you may be doing a bit late and the face is past square when ball releases. The solution? Try aiming a bit more inside on the ball giving the face more time to close with ball compressed on face before releasing. Seems counter intuitive until you observe how fast the face snaps to square and wrists lock in unlar deviation as if hitting a doorstop. It was one of Hogan’s ‘secret’ moves you will discover if you read his Five Lessons and try what he suggests but he doesn’t explain how or why it works like I’ve tried to.

I do this but put the butt end of putter more straight back (no forward press). I also address the ball off my front foot which gives me a feeling of hitting up on the ball. My left hand is under the grip facing the sky and right hand perpendicular to the target line. I use a mallet putter with a double bend shaft that I loosened the epoxy to adjust to my sight preference. I then re-epoxied and was perfect for my setup position. Thanks for the upload.

Jack Nicklaus had a great ‘rule of thumb’ tip for this in “Golf My Way” he said came from his coach Jack Grout. For width insides of ankles under armpits /| |\ , but never so wide a lateral shift of the pelvis will cause the pelvis to sway beyond the outsides of the feet. It allows lateral movement without loss of balance.

The problem are the words 'Open' and 'Closed' clubface at the top of the backswing . It means nothing unless you say " relative to.............." ??????. What is it closed relative to? It's definitely not open or closed relative to swing path is it? Also, say the golfer retained that cupped wrist approaching impact , where do you think the clubface will be pointing? It will be pointing left of ball -target line , not right . So Michael's assumption that the clubface being 'open' (whatever that means) at the top of the backswing will also mean it will be open to 'club path' approaching impact does not tie together.

You are so right. Im 59. I was always a short hitter. Driver 200 or so. 5 iron 160. I found lag and release because of the hip turn. I was always hitting at the ball. Now with an extended extention, a tucked trail elbow and leading with my legs and hios first actually snaps the club to contact. I couldn't do that or even understand the feeling until 2 weeks ago. Wow...what a difference. Everything is longer now and I have been rolling off the back of greens rather than plopping short. Ball flight is lower and some great looking golf shots. Move those sexy hips!
